It seems there is a general consent among the martial arts population (Kendo, Aikido, etc.) when selecting Keikogi or Hakama for purchase, the product description will often indicate a number such as #5000, #8800, or #10,000 that is often confusing. People generally end up making their selection based on price instead of knowing exactly what they have selected. To demystify this number, we will try to look at these numbers from a slightly more scientific approach.

I want to talk about IBB Men Gane (Grill). IBB Men Gane have always been marketed as a high end product that is often associated with tight stitching Bogu (2mm) or expensive hand-stitched products. They are sold with expensive sets for a reason. The weight distribution of the Gane is higher up on the MEN, which prevents Kendoka from lowering their head and vision from the opponents due to heavy MEN. Please see here, the weight is distributed toward the top of the MEN instead of the lower part of the MEN. IBB also has better impact absorbtion than traditional Duralumin and Titanium Gane.

Comments : Very good Kote, nearly no breaking in needed. Would and will buy again! Only flaw is the delivery to Germany via EMS and GDSK. GDSK makes the delivery and customs service quite expensive.

Comments : I've been shopping around for a nice kendo uniform to add to the rotation of my Iaido gear and I have to say, I'm going to be wearing this uniform a lot more than the others. Very good heavy-weight material on the hakama and the deluxe keikogi fits better than any gi I've purchased. The shipping only took about 5 days to send to the central valley, california. The price was substantially lower than comparable uniforms on competing websites. Though as a rule, indigo dyed clothes MUST be washed several times prior to wearing...or you'll turn blue. I washed my 3 times on cold with an extra rinse.

Product : High quality T/C Hakama Tetron & Cotton (Blue)

Date Posted : 10/10/2011
Comments : There are many pros and cons to go with this hakama... Pro: - Hold the folds extremely well (perfect for lazy people like me). - Warm (What can I say? I'm used to the 32 degree C back home). - Much lighter than the traditional hakama. Con: - Does not give the same feel. - The sound it makes when moving around (but then again, the Dojo is anything but a quiet place). - Does not offer as much protection (Your tare is your last line of defense against bad do-uchi!) Some will love while others might hate this special hakama. Personally, I would go to the shop in Richmond and try this out. The customer service is awesome (wink) and definitely worth your time.

Product : Single layered Keikogi with pattern (Blue)

Date Posted : 10/10/2011
Comments : The single layer have its advantage. Sure its cheaper, but also it dries off easier compare to double-layer. Pro: The feeling this gi gives is on the "rugged" side (who wants a Keikogi to be soft and smooth anyway?), but it does not get in the way when practicing. Con: The sleeves are kind short, which means after the Kote is worn it still leaves 1-2 inch of forearm uncovered. Maybe its a personal preference but I would rather have longer sleeves just in case..

Subject : Could be better

Product : Aramid Flexible Bogu Bag with Cotton Lining and backstraps
Link : Here
Poster : Spec
Date Posted : 10/10/2011
Comments : Well...its the bag that does its job. The bogu can be fit in this bag with ease, plus various pockets to put extra tsuba and other small items. The strap on top also helps to secure the bogu inside, plus hakama and gi can be folded and locked in place, making them very easy to access. It would be perfect, however, if: - The shoulder "padding" is thicker, reduce the pain from the bogu's weight. - The "bottom" of this bag is inserted a piece of plastic, sadly it breaks easily, making the bag unstable when left standing.

Product : Top Quality 5MM/2.5MM Machine Stitched Bogu Set (In Stock)
Link : Here
Poster : Spec
Date Posted : 10/10/2011
Comments : The 5mm Bogu set was perfect for beginner. The bigger stitch width makes the process of "breaking-in" easier, while "cushion" the strikes easily. The Kote is comfortable, but extra padding around the knuckle and wrist area would definitely help to maximize comfort. Overall, the 5mm/2.5mm bogu set is very light it can be worn all day (tested), does its job surprisingly well in comparison with the price and is perfect for beginner kendoka who are on budget. Definitely recommended.

Comments : This is an excellent bogu, comfortable as well as beautiful, made with an attention to every detail. Hard to find something of that level for the price! Bogushop’s people are both friendly and efficient. As I am big and tall, somes pieces of the bogu as well as a hakama and keikogi have been order-made at no extra cost, and were shipped in even less than the announced 3 weeks delivery-time. The tailor-made hakama in particular is first-rate. Be sure to handwash (machine wash cold gentle cycle is ok) hakama and gi at least twice otherwise you will turn completely blue :-) but this goes with the beautiful natural indigo dying. Among other items deserving special mention are the excellent shinais (especially the Tadatsune dobari style) and the lovely and lightweight Aramid bogu bag and shinai bag. Last, I would tell my fellow European kendoist that they should be shopping at Bogushop without hesitation, as even when including shipping price and import tax, the price stays well below the current European prices.

Comments : I have heard various comments about bogushop and know that they have been around for several years. I am a very skeptical person always want to see and feel the bogu before I purchase them (my first set was bought in Japan). After seeing Bogushop at the Steveston Taikai I visited their showroom. The place is off a residential area and you have to call for an appointment before you go, which I find it’s a bit of a hassle. However, the owners are very professional and friendly. They carry an extensive line of products at their Richmond showroom, and have all the sizes. I bought a 4/2mm set since it’s my second set I knew what size I wanted. My friend also bought the same set and it’s his first set so he wasn’t sure about the sizes. The owners were very helpful and patient in determining the right sizes. They let my friend try on every single part of the bogu and made sure everything fits. The service was excellent. Now I have been using the 4/2mm set for about 2 months now and everything is great. The quality is good for what you pay for and it’s quite comparable to my first set which I bought in Japan years ago. Everything fits comfortably after I broke in the men and kote. The only downside is that the black paint on the men started to chip but I guess that’s regular wear and tear. After all, my experience with bogushop was very positive and since they are in Vancouver I am going to buy my future kendo needs from them.

Comments : Hey, I just received my new hakama. The shipping was very fast - 5 days from ordering (even though it came from Shanghai). The hakama is amazing, the real thing, great material and shape. Of course, I washed it immediately 2 times, (or it will leave a lot of indigo on your skin (that is how the real indigo dye should do).

Comments : Based on a positive assessment of Bogushop by a Canada-based sensei, I visited their website, perused the product line and decided to purchase and try the 1.2 bu kote model as a backup to my several sets of Japanese-made hand stitched kote. One thing I appreciate is that Bogushop, unlike some other vendors, is fully-open about their products, down to the country of origin or each component. In the case of this model, 100% Japanese components combined with final assembly at the Bogushop factory result in a product that is aesthetically indistinguishable from Japanese-made kote. Functionally, whereas these are assembled and fitted on an order by order basis (like a custom-made set), I found the fit and feel to be superb, requiring practically no break-in. At the current price, I haven’t found a better value anywhere.
